Flowers in Church
We have flowers in church on a regular basis except during Lent and Advent, so we always have a need for parishioners to arrange the flowers in turn on a rota at both churches. At St Joseph’s we have 4 regular flower arrangers and at St Bernadette’s we have 3 flower arrangers.
An arrangement is always required at the front of the altar (not on the altar table). In St Joseph’s we also place an arrangement in the side chapel and in the front of St Joseph’s statue. The Paschal Candle is also decorated from Easter
Generally, we use white, yellow or pastel coloured flowers. Red flowers are not used except where permitted on certain feast days e.g. Pentecost.
Fresh flowers are always used and not artfiicial plants or flowers.
On special occasions such as Christmas and Easter the flowers are ordered in bulk for both churches and all the flowers arrangers help with the extra arrangements for these times.
At other times the arrangers take turns on a rota for choosing, fetching and arranging the flowers fortnightly.
More information about preparing the environment for mass including flowers can be found in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, leaflets of which can be found on the Liturgy Office for England & Wales www.liturgyoffice.org.uk
